The RIAA Just Got Insanely Fast at Censoring Links From Google

The RIAA Just Got Insanely Fast at Censoring Links From Google

It should come as no surprise that the RIAA, of all organizations, plays particularly fast and loose with its DMCA takedown requests. But thanks to a ridiculous blitz, the RIAA just had its 25 millionth link removed from Google search results. And it's not slowing down.

According to TorrentFreak the RIAA hit its 20 million link milestone just last May, a number that took a whole year to reach. Now, the RIAA's racked up an additional five million in a mere six weeks. To pull that off, the RIAA has to be doling out those DMCA requests more than twice as fast as it was just months ago.

Even with this new, blistering pace, the RIAA is only the second most takedown-happy organization Google has to deal with. Number one is the Indian-based anti-piracy organization Degban which is ahead with an all-time score of around 28 mil. Still, it looks like the RIAA is running faster all the time, and at this rate they'll be number one in no time. We'll have to just wait and see if this magically solves piracy. [TorrentFreak]

LONDON -- An anonymous buyer snapped up a lock of Mick Jagger's hair for $6,000 after bidders pushed the price to double its pre-sale estimate, auction house Bonhams said.

The clump of hair was sold by the Rolling Stone's former girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton, who is also the sister of 1960s English model Jean Shrimpton and first met Jagger when he was still an unknown student at the London School of Economics.

The hair, which comes in an envelope bearing the message "Mick Jagger's hair after being washed + trimmed by Chris at Rose Hill Farm," was sold on Wednesday to raise money for the Changing Faces charity, which works with people who have suffered facial disfigurements.

A set of handwritten lyrics by British singer David Bowie for his song "The Jean Genie" sold for more than $28,300 at the auction where a guitar owned by rock group Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page also sold for more than $39,600 alongside other music, film and entertainment memorabilia.

Jagger, who is due to turn 70 this month, was in fine form on Saturday as the Rolling Stones made their debut at Glastonbury music festival. The band is due to play again this weekend in Hyde Park as part of the British Summer Time festival.

Fly Or Die: Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

Screen Shot 2013-07-03 at 10.19.00 PMWe first caught wind of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active back in May, before it had been announced. Ruggedized smartphones aren't always so tantalizing, but seeing that the Galaxy S4 Active is a variant of the Samsung flagship Galaxy S4, we thought it wise to bring the little guy in for an episode of Fly or Die.

Germany to US: 'Bugging friends is unacceptable'

While speaking in Tanzania Monday, President Barack Obama addresses a report that the U.S. spied on European Union allies.

By Stephen Brown, Annika Breidthardt and Michelle Martin, Reuters

BERLIN - The German government said on Monday if media reports of large-scale U.S. spying on the European Union were confirmed, it would be unacceptable Cold War-style behavior between partners who require mutual trust.

"If it is confirmed that diplomatic representations of the European Union and individual European countries have been spied upon, we will clearly say that bugging friends is unacceptable," said Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert. "We are no longer in the Cold War."

Germany wanted an EU-U.S. free trade deal which would foster economic growth and job creation, said Seibert. But he added: "Mutual trust is necessary in order to come to an agreement."

Edward Snowden's future now seems out of his hands as the self-proclaimed whistle blower remains in a Moscow airport without a valid American passport. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

German magazine Der Spiegel reported over the weekend that the NSA had tapped communications at EU offices in Washington, Brussels and at the United Nations. ?According to the report, the NSA taps half a billion phone calls, emails and text messages in Germany in a typical month, much more than any other European peer.?

Meanwhile, the leader of Germany's opposition Greens suggested that Europe provide a safe haven for former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who revealed?the extent of U.S. surveillance programs.

Juergen Trittin, parliamentary leader and candidate for chancellor of the Greens, Germany's third biggest party, told German television it was an outrage that the 30-year-old leaker should be seeking asylum in "despotic" countries.

"Someone like that should be protected," he said. "He should get safe haven here in Europe because he has done us a service by revealing a massive attack on European citizens and companies. Germany, as part of Europe, could do that."

Trittin did not specify which "despots" he was referring to.

Snowden flew from the United States to Hong Kong and is now in an international airport in Russia seeking asylum in Ecuador - the country that has been sheltering WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in its London embassy since last year.?
