Honda orders recall because of fire risk -- for 2nd time

Autos

The Detroit Bureau

The 2007-2008 Honda Fit's master power window switch can short and even catch fire if it gets wet.

Honda has become the latest automaker to order a recall due to the risk of potential vehicle fires ? a problem linked to a defective power window switch that has led to major recalls at several competitors including Toyota and General Motors. Embarrassingly, it is the second time Honda has had to repair the affected vehicles for the same problem.

In fact, with the recall covering just 143,083 Honda Fit subcompacts sold in the U.S., the latest safety action is relatively modest when compared to the 2.5 million vehicles Toyota had to recall in the States for the problem last October.

The latest action involves 2007 and 2008 model-year Honda subcompacts and is linked to a defective power window module that is vulnerable to rain or spilled liquids that might over time get in through the driver?s window.

?Over time,? the maker explains in a release, ?exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire.?

More from The Detroit Bureau:'Lola' tops 200 mph, sets EV world speed record

That is precisely the problem Honda described in January 2010 when it conducted a recall of the same Fit models for the same problem, using a fix it now says, ?has since been determined by Honda not to be sufficiently robust to ensure that all switches would be completely sealed against all possible moisture intrusion.?

If that is not problematic enough, Honda apparently may have to subject some owners to an additional, two-step repair process. It is asking owners of the affected vehicles to bring the little hatchbacks in for inspection as soon as possible. If it appears the defective switches show obvious damage they will be replaced immediately. If not, the maker says it will send the vehicles home, and will contact them later in the year to come back for a replacement ?when sufficient supplies of the updated switch are available.?

It is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to announce large recalls because underlying components are frequently shared among a wide range of vehicles. And many suppliers sell the same, or nearly identical, components to more than one manufacturer.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Terrorists may be targeting our high-tech cars

As a result, Toyota was forced to recall 7.4 million cars, trucks and crossovers last autumn to deal with the same power window switch issue, including 2.5 million sold in the States. It was the Japanese giant?s largest recall ever.

General Motors has also had to order major recalls covering a wide range of products due to the switch problem, including one recall announced earlier this month involving 250,000 Chevrolet Trailblazers and GMC Envoy SUVs.A defective airbag system produced by a single supplier, Takata, similarly led to a major recall by a wide range of Asian and Western makers earlier this year.

But the Honda recall is a problem for the maker at a variety of levels. It not only is ordering a re-do of previous work but could subject some owners to multiple additional visits to the repair shop.

Compounding the situation, Honda has suffered a growing number of safety-related recalls in recent years, coming in as first or second in terms of the number of individual vehicles involved for each of the last four years.

More from The Detroit Bureau:Would you buy a Chinese-made Ford

And this year it seems on track to lead the list again, having recalled several million vehicles sold in the U.S. for problems including brake and airbag defects, as well as transmissions that can shift out of Park resulting in runaway vehicles.

Nonetheless, the maker still landed in the Top 10 according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, a measure of problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days after purchase. But the maker lagged behind Toyota and, among mainstream brands, both Chevrolet and GMC ? their parent General Motors topping the IQS list among individual manufacturers for the first time.

Plaintiffs in Calif. gay marriage case wed in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The lead plaintiffs in the U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned California's same-sex marriage ban tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall on Friday, about an hour after a federal appeals court freed gay couples to obtain marriage licenses for the first time in 4 1/2 years.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris presided at the wedding of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, of Berkeley, as hundreds of supporters looked on and cheered. The couple sued to overturn the state's voter-approved gay marriage ban along with Jeff Katami and Paul Zarrillo, of Burbank, who planned to marry Friday evening at Los Angeles City Hall.

"By joining the case against Proposition 8, they represented thousands of couples like themselves in their fight for marriage equality," Harris, who had asked the appeals court to act swiftly, said during Stier and Perry's brief ceremony. "Through the ups and downs, the struggles and the triumphs, they came out victorious."

Harris declared Perry, 48, and Stier, 50, "spouses for life," but during their vows, they took each other as "lawfully wedded wife." One of their twin sons served as ring-bearer.

Although the couple fought for the right to wed for years, their wedding came together in a flurry when a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a brief order Friday afternoon dissolving, "effective immediately," a stay it imposed on gay marriages while the lawsuit challenging the ban advanced through the courts.

Sponsors of California's same-sex marriage ban called the appeals court's swift action "outrageous."

"The resumption of same-sex marriage this day has been obtained by illegitimate means. If our opponents rejoice in achieving their goal in a dishonorable fashion, they should be ashamed," said Andy Pugno, general counsel for a coalition of religious conservative groups that sponsored Proposition 8.

"It remains to be seen whether the fight can go on, but either way, it is a disgraceful day for California," Pugno said.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday that Proposition 8's sponsors lacked authority to defend the measure in court once Harris and Gov. Jerry Brown, both Democrats, refused to do so.

The decision lets stand a trial judge's declaration that the ban, approved by voters in November 2008, violates the civil rights of gay Californians and cannot be enforced.

Under Supreme Court rules, the losing side in a legal dispute has 25 days to ask the high court to rehear the case. The court said earlier this week that it would not finalize its ruling in the Proposition 8 case until after that time had elapsed.

It was not immediately clear whether the appeals court's action would be halted by the high court, but Gov. Jerry Brown directed California counties to start performing same-sex marriages immediately in the wake of it.

A memo from Brown's Department of Public Health said "same-sex marriage is again legal in California" and ordered county clerks to resume issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

Given that word did not come down from the appeals court until mid-afternoon, most counties were not prepared to stay open late to accommodate potential crowds. The clerks in a few counties announced that they would stay open a few hours later Friday.

A jubilant San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced that same-sex couples would be able to marry all weekend in his city, which is hosting its annual gay pride celebration this weekend.

'Lola' tops 204 mph, breaking electric vehicle land speed record

Autos

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

Drayson Racing/The Detroit Bureau

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

With all the emphasis on electric propulsion these days, it might seem hard to believe that it?s been 39 years since General Electric ? yes, GE ? set the FIA World Electric Land Speed Record. But that achievement has finally been bested by a sleek, Le Mans Prototype dubbed ?Lola.?

On an RAF airbase in Yorkshire, England, an 850-horsepower battery-electric built by Drayson Racing hit a top speed of 204.185 miles per hour during a pair of runs down a 3-kilometer (nearly 2-mile) track. That was a full 29 mph faster than the 175 mph record set way back in 1974 by the Battery Box General Electric.

?I?m delighted we?ve beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable,? said Lord Paul Drayson, whose firm built the 2,200 battery, and who personally piloted it during the record run. ?It is not the outright speed of 204.185 mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000 kilogram electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile.?

Officially known as the Drayson B12 69/EV the enclosed racer used ultra-light carbon fiber for its chassis and body to compensate for the heft of a 30 kilowatt-hour battery pack. It also relied on custom-designed Michelin LM P1 tires.

Though most folks likely associate electric propulsion with ? but slow ? vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt, the reality is that battery power can also deliver some impressive performance as an electric motor yields maximum torque the moment it starts spinning.

Drayson?s Lola can launch from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds, for example, and keep gaining speed until it?s pushed well past 200 mph. In fact, Lord Drayson is apparently looking to soon beat his own record, tweeting to fans that on an additional run the car was ?very lively at 216 mph.?

While he may be celebrating victory, the claimed record could come under dispute. The Buckeye Bullet, an EV built by students at Ohio State University, actually achieved a 307.7 mph average during two runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in August 2010 ? and was seen as capable of reaching 400 mph. But that effort was not officially sanctioned by the FIA, leaving GE?s Battery Box the certified record-holder for another three years.

To proponents, what matters most is the increasing focus in electric racing and battery propulsion, in general.

There?s clearly a lot more interest, for example, has nudged its ZEOD RC battery race car up to 186 mph, and Top EV Racing claims to have launched its battery dragster from 0 to 100 in a mind-boggling 0.8 seconds.

What could put battery racing square in the public eye is the new Formula E series set to launch in 2015. Not surprisingly, Lord Drayson is looking to participate when that program gets underway.

Fed bond-buying could be more aggressive than new timeline: Dudley

By Jonathan Spicer

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve's asset purchases would be more aggressive than the timeline Chairman Ben Bernanke outlined last week if economic growth and the labor market turn out weaker than expected, the influential head of the New York Fed said on Thursday.

Pushing back hard against market concerns over the withdrawal of quantitative easing, William Dudley stressed in a speech that the newly adopted timeline for reducing the pace of bond buying depends not on calendar dates but on the economic outlook, which remains quite unclear.

Turning to the question of when the Fed will ultimately raise interest rates, Dudley, a close ally of Bernanke, went so far as to say that recent market expectations for an earlier rate rise are "quite out of sync" with the statements and expectations of the policy-making Federal Open Market Committee.

"Economic circumstances could diverge significantly from the FOMC's expectations," Dudley said according to prepared remarks.

"If labor market conditions and the economy's growth momentum were to be less favorable than in the FOMC's outlook ? and this is what has happened in recent years ? I would expect that the asset purchases would continue at a higher pace for longer."

Following a Fed policy meeting last week, Bernanke surprised markets by saying the central bank expected to reduce the $85-billion monthly pace of bond buying later this year and to end the QE3 program altogether by mid-2014, if the economy improves as expected.

Global markets have since fallen sharply, with yields on the 10-year U.S. Treasury spiking to near a two-year high.

Dudley repeated and backed the timeline Bernanke articulated last Wednesday. But he appeared to want to bolster efforts by some of his Fed colleagues this week to calm investors' worries that less Fed accommodation will hurt the slow U.S. and global economic recovery.

The labor market, which the Fed is targeting with QE3, "still cannot be regarded as healthy," Dudley said, adding "there remains a great deal of slack in the economy."

He expects about 2.1 percent Gross Domestic Product growth this year, about the same as it has been since the recession ended in 2009. But Dudley expects that to pick up next year.

Frustrated with fitful U.S. recovery from the Great Recession, the central bank has kept the federal funds rate near zero since late 2008 and has promised to keep it there at least until the unemployment rate falls to 6.5 percent, from 7.6 percent now, as long as inflation stays below 2.5 percent.

Even under the timeline for reducing QE3, "a rise in short-term rates is very likely to be a long way off," Dudley said.

"Not only will it likely take considerable time to reach the FOMC's 6.5 percent unemployment rate threshold, but also the FOMC could wait considerably longer before raising short-term rates," he said.

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs color-matching backlit soft keys (hands-on)

Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs colormatching backlit soft keys handson

After the official product shot leaked in late May, we knew it wouldn't be long before Huawei's Ascend W2 makes an official appearance. Well, today's the day, but as the company's second-ever Windows Phone device, the W2's appearance at Mobile Asia Expo was surprisingly low key. According to the spec sheet at Huawei's booth, this affordable phone comes with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display (looked like IPS to us) and a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 SoC (same as the W1 but faster) with 512MB RAM. There's 8GB of built-in storage along with microSD expansion -- the slot is located next to the removable 1,700mAh battery plus full-size SIM slot, all underneath the red or yellow back cover.

Even though Huawei doesn't hide the fact that the W2 is a low-cost device, it's actually not too shabby, either. Most notably, the three usual soft keys are backlit, and their color even matches your desired theme in Windows Phone 8. As a bonus, the touchscreen has a glove mode -- as featured on several other more recent Huawei phones -- for the cold winter days. There's still no price or date announced just yet, but since this particular model packs a TD-SCDMA radio for China Mobile, folks outside China will have to wait for the WCDMA variant. For now, we have a hands-on video for you after the break.

Sandra Bullock: 'I let loose' with 'F-bombs' in film

Celebs

It's never a dull moment with Sandra Bullock in the TODAY studio, and an interview that aired Tuesday was no exception as the actress discussed her new film "The Heat" (with Melissa McCarthy).

But before getting to "The Heat," Bullock recalled her last visit to the show in 2011 when she was on to talk with Matt Lauer about her film "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."

What ensued was a goofy banter worthy of, well, a Bullock comedy:

"We were here for 'Extremely Loud,'" she reminded him.

"That's right, I do remember that," he said.

"But apparently, I got very upset with you, and then you sent me flowers to apologize," she said, and put on a sassy tone: "I got no flowers."

"I didn't know you were upset with me," said Lauer.

"I didn't either, but apparently you sent flowers," she said.

"Is that what they wrote about us?" he asked. "Do we have a feud?"

"Can I just get some flowers, just for the heck of it, before this weekend?" she asked.

Which led Lauer to bounce up and try to retrieve a large potted flower arrangement over by the windows. A gentlemanly gesture, but unfortunately he splashed water on himself and gave up.

"That is amazing, thank you so much!" gushed Bullock.

The fact is, it seems hard to get the Oscar-winning actress riled up; after all, she's now promoting an R-rated comedy that's full of "F-bombs," as she put it.

"I let loose," she admitted. But is she like that in real life? "Are you joking me? All the time."

Still, whatever might come out of Bullock's mouth in the film, it's nothing compared to what McCarthy said. "She opens her mouth and you have no idea what offensive and hurtful things are going to come out of it about you personally," said Bullock, very subtly tongue-in-cheek.

"Do not lump me in with that sailor potty mouth Melissa McCarthy," she added.

No chance, and just in case an offense was being taken, one of the crew walked on set with another, more portable bouquet of flowers for Bullock. "Now," she asked, "who's got the jewelry?"

"The Heat" opens in theaters on June 28.

Russia: NSA leaker Snowden has 'not crossed Russian border'

As of Monday, NSA leaker Edward Snowden was still on the lam. He has managed to evade U.S. officials, who are reportedly furious with China for letting him escape to Moscow after the FBI thought they had him bottled up in Hong Kong. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By Ed Flanagan and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

HONG KONG -- Russia angrily denied it was involved in Edward Snowden's attempts to evade U.S prosecutors Tuesday, saying the fugitive had not crossed its borders as Washington became mired in a diplomatic spat with Moscow and Beijing.

The former defense contractor, who fled Hong Kong on Sunday, is believed to be in transit in Moscow awaiting approval for his safe passage to Ecuador - the latest move in a global manhunt that has humiliated U.S. authorities.

Russia rejected pressure from Secretary of State John Kerry, who on Monday called on it to ?do the right thing? and prevent Snowden from leaving Moscow.

"He has not crossed the Russian border," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a joint news conference with Algeria's foreign minister. We consider the attempts to put blame on the Russian side ... absolutely groundless and unacceptable."

China also expressed anger at Washington?s accusation that it had not acted on an extradition request.

"The U.S. side has no reason to call into question the Hong Kong government's handling of affairs according to law," China foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing, according to Reuters. "The United States' criticism of China's central government is baseless. China absolutely cannot accept it."

However, a local lawyer involved in Snowden?s stay in Hong Kong appeared to back up U.S. concerns, suggesting in an interview that officials allowed the leaker to escape to Moscow.

Albert Ho said that he met Hong Kong officials last week on Snowden?s behalf to discuss the fugitive?s options.

He said Beijing, faced with a U.S. extradition request that also revoked Snowden's passport, wanted to "resolve the matter pragmatically."

Ho said Snowden departed Hong Kong normally and "smoothly", using his U.S. passport.

"The matter was handled in such as way that Snowden was either advised to leave or he was allowed to leave," Ho said. "That was the middle course, I would say, seeking to avoid direct confrontation between the American government and the Chinese government."

On Monday,?White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Beijing government must have been involved in the decision to allow Snowden to depart.

"We are just not buying that this was a technical decision by a Hong Kong immigration official," Carney told reporters.?

"This was a deliberate choice by the government to release a fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant, and that decision unquestionably has a negative impact on the U.S.-China relationship."

Ecuador, which is already harboring WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy, said Monday it was reviewing Snowden's asylum request and would make a decision based on human rights considerations, its foreign minister Ricardo Patino told reporters while on a trip to Vietnam.

Patino said Ecuador was in "respectful" contact with Russia over the issue, adding that the U.S. surveillance programs exposed by Snowden were a rights abuse against the rest of the world.

Only Russia could say where Snowden was currently, Patino added.

Underlining the probability that Snowden would head to Ecuador, Assange told reporters on a conference call Monday that he had been in touch with the American, who he said was healthy and safe.

Aeroflot officials told reports in Moscow that Snowden had "registered" for Monday's flight to the Cuban capital, Havana, but the flight later departed with no sign of the American on board.?

An Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Havana departed at about 2pm local time on Tuesday afternoon. No one had bought a ticket under Snowden?s name for the flight, employees of the airline said earlier.

Reuters contributed to this report.

8 great Stepparenting tips - Blending Blog - Blended Family Gifts

adviceA few months ago I asked this question on my Facebook page: what?s the best piece of advice you would give to a new stepparent? The answers I got apply to experienced stepparents as well.

Here are some of them:

?Have patience. Lots and lots of patience.? (amen!)

?If the stepchild is a teen you probably aren?t going to do anything right & a lot of the child?s hurt & anger is going to be directed at you. Let love guide your decisions but don?t bend over backwards. Expect respect and nothing else. And know that they will soon grow out of it. ? ( my favorite)

?Try to go with the flow where appropriate and where possible!? (couldn?t agree more)

?Don?t worry about the other home or the other parent. Focus on what YOU do in YOUR home. Don?t talk about the other parent. Don?t compare yourself or what you do in your home to how the other parent does it to the kids. The kids KNOW the difference. They don?t need you pointing it out.? (yup, that should be a daily reminder)

?Don?t try to be perfect and don?t feel bad if negative feelings like jealousy arise. Simply look for help. It?s part of the process.? (my answer)

?Don?t loose who you are, be YOU and be a great YOU! ? (indeed!)

?Before you walk in..understand the family dynamic in regards to support/custody and access?..set down ground rules including the role each parent will play in enforcing these expectations. ? (very, very wise answer) ?

?Don?t take things too personally?it?s not always about you. ? by Stepville, another great page on FB

?

Would love to hear your own tips. Feel free to share them in the comments section below.

Mo. woman charged in antifreeze poisoning deaths

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) ? A southwest Missouri woman is charged with using antifreeze to fatally poison her husband and son and attempt to kill her daughter over a 14-month period.

Fifty-one-year-old Diane Staudte of Springfield was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action. She is being held without bond. It isn't immediately clear if she has an attorney.

The probable cause statement says authorities received an anonymous tip earlier this month.

The statement says Staudte admitted under questioning to killing her husband, 61-year-old Mark Staudte, in April 2012 and her son, 26-year-old Shawn Staudte, in September.

The statement also says she admitted poisoning her daughter, 24-year-old Sarah Staudte, this month. She survived.

UK ratifies treaty with Jordan over Abu Qatada

LONDON (AP) ? Britain has ratified a treaty with Jordan that could speed the extradition of radical Muslim preacher Abu Qatada.

The Home Office said Friday that a 21-day parliamentary scrutiny period for the treaty expired overnight.

Jordan's King Abdullah II endorsed the treaty earlier this week.

Several steps must unfold before the document comes into force, including an exchange of diplomatic notes between Britain and Jordan.

Britain has been trying for more than a decade to extradite the cleric, who was convicted in absentia over terrorist plots in Jordan. British courts have blocked the move, saying evidence gained by torture could be used against him at trial.

The treaty aims to guarantee that will not happen. Lawyers for Abu Qatada have said he will return to Jordan voluntarily if it is ratified.

Harvey Organ's - The Daily Gold and Silver Report

Eventually the money runs out.? Much of America was shocked when the city of Detroit defaulted on a?$39.7 million?debt payment and announced that it was suspending payments on$2.5 billion?of unsecured debt, but those who visit?my site?on a regular basis were probably not too surprised.? Anyone with half a brain and a calculator could see this coming from a mile away.??But people kept foolishly lending money to the city of Detroit, and now many of them are going to get hit really hard. ? Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has submitted a proposal that would pay unsecured creditors about?10 cents?on the dollar.? Similar haircuts would be made to underfunded pension and health benefits for retirees.? Orr is hoping that the creditors and the unions that he will be negotiating with will accept this package, but he concedes that there is still a "50-50 chance" that the city of Detroit will be forced to formally file for bankruptcy.? But what Detroit is facing is not really that unique.??In fact, Detroit is a perfect example of what the future of America is going to look like.? We live in a nation that is rotting, decaying, drowning in debt and racing toward insolvency.? Already there are dozens of other cities across the nation that are poverty-ridden, crime-infested hellholes?just like Detroit is, and hundreds of other communities are rapidly heading in that direction.? So don't look down on Detroit.? They just got there before the rest of us.?

The following are some facts about Detroit that are absolutely mind-blowing...

1?- Detroit was once the fourth-largest city in the United States, and in 1960 Detroit had the?highest per-capita income?in the entire nation. 2?- Over the past 60 years, the population of Detroit has fallen by?63 percent. 3?- At this point, approximately?40 percent?of all the streetlights in the city don't work. 4?- Some ambulances in the city of Detroit have been used for so long that they have?more than 250,000 miles?on them. 7?- Approximately?one-third?of Detroit's 140 square miles is either vacant or derelict. 8?-?Less than half?of the residents of Detroit over the age of 16 are working at this point. 9?- If you can believe it,?60 percent?of all children in the city of Detroit are living in poverty. 10?- According to one very shocking report,?47 percent?of the residents of Detroit are functionally illiterate. 12?- Ten years ago, there were approximately 5,000 police officers in the city of Detroit.? Today, there are only?about 2,500?and another 100 are scheduled to be eliminated from the force soon. 13?- Due to budget cutbacks, most police stations in Detroit are now closed to the public?for 16 hours a day. 14?- The murder rate in Detroit is?11 times higher?than it is in New York City. 16?- Right now, the city of Detroit is facing?$20 billion?in debt and unfunded liabilities.? That breaks down to more than $25,000 per resident.

?What the average Detroiter needs to understand is that where we are right now is a culmination of years and years and years of kicking the can down the road,? said Orr, adding that?his proposal should not be seen as a ?hostile act? but as a step in the right direction.

Does that sound familiar?

It should.

U.S. politicians have also been kicking the can down the road for "years and years and years".

But eventually you can't kick the can down the road anymore.

Sometimes it is helpful to step back and look at what we have done to ourselves over the past several decades.

And our debt binge has greatly accelerated under Barack Obama.

Isn't that insane?

In fact, if you started paying off?just the new debt?that the U.S. has accumulated during the Obama administration at the rate of one dollar per second, it would take?more than 184,000 years?to pay it off.

#1?While Barack Obama has been president, the U.S. government has spent?about 11 dollars?for every 7 dollars of revenue that it has actually brought in. #3?During fiscal year 2011,?over a trillion dollars?of government money was spent on 83 different welfare programs, and those numbers do not even include Social Security or Medicare. #4?Over the past four years, welfare spending has increased by?32 percent.? In inflation-adjusted dollars, spending on those programs has risen by?378 percent?over the past 30 years.? At this point, more than?100 million Americans?are enrolled in at least one welfare program run by the federal government.? Once again, these figures do not even include Social Security or Medicare. #5?Over the past year, the number of Americans getting a free cell phone from the federal government has grown?by 43 percent.? Now more than 16 million Americans are enjoying what has come to be known as an "Obamaphone". #6?When Barack Obama first entered the White House, about 32 million Americans were on food stamps.? Now,?47 million Americans?are on food stamps.? And this has happened during what Obama refers to as "an economic recovery". #8?The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently spent?$300,000?to encourage Americans to eat caviar at a time when more families than ever are having a really hard time just trying to put any food on the table at all. #10?The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave the largest snack food maker in the world (PepsiCo Inc.) a total of 1.3 million dollars in corporate welfare that was used to help build "a Greek yogurt factory in New York." #11?The National Science Foundation recently gave researchers at Purdue University?$350,000.? They used part of that money to help fund a study that discovered that if golfers imagine that a hole is bigger it will help them with their putting. #12?If you can believe it,?$10,000?from the federal government was actually used to purchase talking urinal cakes up in Michigan. #13?The National Science Foundation recently gave a whopping?$697,177?to a New York City-based theater company to produce a musical about climate change. #14?The National Institutes of Health recently gave?$666,905?to a group of researchers that is studying the benefits of watching reruns on television. #15?The National Science Foundation has given?1.2 million dollars?to a team of "scientists" that is spending part of that money on a study that is seeking to determine whether elderly Americans would benefit from playing World of Warcraft or not. #16?The National Institutes of Health recently gave?$548,731to a team of researchers that concluded that those that drink heavily in their thirties also tend to feel more immature. #17?The National Science Foundation recently spent?$30,000?on a study to determine if "gaydar" actually exists.? This is the conclusion that the researchers reached at the end of the study...

"Gaydar is indeed real and? its accuracy is driven by sensitivity to individual facial features"

#18?Back in 2011, the National Institutes of Health spent$592,527?on a study that sought to figure out once and for all why chimpanzees throw poop. #19?The U.S. government spends more on the military than China, Russia, Japan, India, and the rest of NATO?combined.? In fact, the United States accounts for?41.0%?of all military spending on the planet.? China is next with only?8.2%. #21?In 2006, only?12 percent?of all federal workers made $100,000 or more per year.? Now, approximately?22 percent?of all federal workers do. #24?The U.S. Department of Defense had just nine civilians earning $170,000 or more back in 2005.? When Barack Obama became president, the U.S. Department of Defense had 214 civilians earning $170,000 or more.? By June 2010, the U.S. Department of Defense had?994 civilians?earning $170,000 or more. #26?If you can believe it,?close to 15,000?retired federal employees are currently collecting federal pensions for life worth at least $100,000 annually.? That list includes such names as Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Trent Lott, Dick Gephardt and Dick Cheney. #27?During 2010, the federal government spent?$33,387?on the hair care needs of U.S. Senators. #28?During 2010, U.S. Senators pulled?$72,370?out of the "Senate Restaurant Fund". #29?During 2010, an average of?$4,005,900?of U.S. taxpayer money was spent on "personal" and "office" expenses per Senator. #30?In 2013,?3.7 million dollars?will be spent to support the lavish lifestyles of former presidents such as George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. #32?When you combine all federal government spending, all state government spending and all local government spending, it comes to?approximately 41 percent?of U.S. GDP.? But don't worry, all of our politicians insist that this is not socialism. #33?As I have written about?previously, less than 30 percent of all Americans lived in a home where at least one person received financial assistance from the federal government back in 1983.? Today, that number is sitting at an all-time high of?49 percent. #34?Back in 1990, the federal government accounted for just32 percent?of all health care spending in America.? This year, it is being projected that the federal government will account?for more than 50 percent?of all health care spending in the United States. #35?The number of Americans on Medicaid soared from 34 million in 2000 to?54 million?in 2011, and it is being projected that Obamacare will add?16 million more Americans?to the Medicaid rolls. #36?In one of my?previous articles, I discussed how it is being projected that the number of Americans on Medicare will grow from 50.7 million in 2012 to?73.2 million?in 2025. #37?If you can believe it, Medicare is facing unfunded liabilities of more than 38 trillion dollars over the next 75 years.? That comes to approximately?$328,404?for each and every household in the United States. #40?When Barack Obama first took office, the U.S. national debt was about 10.6 trillion dollars.? Now it is about?16.7 trillion dollars.? That is an increase of 6.1 trillion dollars in a little more than 4 years. #41?The federal government has now run a budget deficit of more than a trillion dollars for?four years in a row. #42?If right this moment you went out and started spending one dollar every single second,?it would take you?more than 31,000 years?to spend?one trillion dollars. #43?If you were alive when Jesus Christ was born and you spent one million dollars every single day since that point, you still would not have spent one trillion dollars by now. #44?Some suggest that "taxing the rich" is the answer.? Well, if Bill Gates gave every single penny of his entire fortune to the U.S. government, it would only cover the U.S. budget deficit?for 15 days. #45?If the federal government used GAAP accounting standards like publicly traded corporations do, the real federal budget deficit for 2011 would have been?5 trillion dollars?instead of 1.3 trillion dollars. #46?The United States already has more government debt?per capita?than Greece, Portugal, Italy, Ireland or Spain does. #47?At this point, the United States government is responsiblefor more than a third?of all the government debt in the entire world. #49?Between 2007 and 2010, U.S. GDP grew by only 4.26%, but the U.S. national debt soared?by 61%?during that same time period. #51?The U.S. national debt is now more than 5000 times larger than it was when the?Federal Reserve?was first created. #52?The U.S. national debt jumped more?on the very first dayof fiscal year 2013 than it did from 1776 to 1941 combined. #53?Historically, the interest rate on 10 year U.S. Treasuries has averaged?6.68 percent.? If the average interest rate on U.S. government debt rose to that level today, the U.S. government would find itself spending more than a trillion dollars per year just on interest on the national debt. #55?Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff is warning that the U.S. government is facing a gigantic tsunami of unfunded liabilities in the coming years that we are counting on our children and our grandchildren to pay.? Kotlikoff speaks of a "fiscal gap" which he defines as "the present value difference between projected future spending and revenue".? His calculations have led him to the conclusion that the federal government is facing a fiscal gap of?222 trillion dollars?in the years ahead.

Please share this article with as many people as you can.? We are in the process of committing national financial suicide and time is rapidly running out to do anything about it.

Just like Detroit, a day is rapidly approaching when America will not be able to kick the can down the road anymore.

Sadly, our politicians don't seem inclined to do anything about it and most of the population seems to think that our exploding national debt is not a significant problem.

By the time it becomes clear how wrong they were, it will be far too late to do anything about it.

Report says immigration bill cuts deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Congressional Budget Office says a sweeping immigration bill before the Senate would cut deficits by $197 billion over 10 years.

The bill would add $262 billion in new spending and tax credits over 10 years, a sum more than covered by $459 billion in increased revenues, according to the report Tuesday by Congress' nonpartisan scorekeepers.

The bill would cut deficits by an additional $700 billion in the second 10 years after taking effect, CBO says.

Some 8 million people in the U.S. illegally would initially gain legal status under the legislation, according to the CBO analysis. That's compared with a population of about 11 million immigrants now in the country illegally.

Indiana woman condemned for killing at 15 is freed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A woman who was sentenced to death at age 16 for taking part in the torture and murder of a 78-year-old bible studies teacher was released from an Indiana prison Monday after growing to middle age behind bars.

Paula Cooper, whose 1986 death sentence enraged human rights activists and drew a plea for clemency from Pope John Paul II, left the state prison quietly in a state-owned van and wearing donated clothing, Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said.

As is customary, the prison, about 60 miles west of Indianapolis, gave the now-43-year-old woman $75 to help her make a fresh start.

When asked where Cooper was being taken, Garrison said, "We have something arranged but that's not something I can talk about."

Cooper was 15 years old when she used a butcher's knife to cut Ruth Pelke 33 times during a robbery in Gary that ended in Pelke's death. Her three companions ? one only 14 ?received lighter sentences, but Cooper confessed to the killing and was sentenced to death by a judge who opposed capital punishment, said former prosecutor Jack Crawford, who sought the death penalty for Cooper. Crawford is now a defense lawyer in Indianapolis and no longer supports capital punishment.

"She sat on her, slicing her," Crawford said. "This was a torture crime."

The following year, Cooper became the country's youngest death row inmate.

The sentencing of a 16-year-old to death enraged human rights activists in the U.S. and Europe. Pope John Paul II urged that Cooper be granted clemency in 1987, and in 1988 a priest brought a petition to Indianapolis with more than 2 million signatures protesting Cooper's sentence.

"There were like protests, 'Save Paula Cooper,' even in Europe it was a rallying cry," said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington. "Her case really became a symbol of the death penalty."

Two years after Cooper was sentenced to die, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in an unrelated case that the execution of young people who were under 16 at the time they committed an offense was cruel and unusual punishment and was thus unconstitutional. Indiana legislators then passed a state law raising the minimum age limit for execution from 10 years to 16, and in 1988, the state's high court set Cooper's death sentence aside and ordered her to serve 60 years in prison.

"Was justice done? Twenty-four years is a long time, but I'm not sure," Crawford said.

Ruth Pelke's grandson, Bill Pelke, has organized opposition to the death penalty since about two years after her murder. His grandmother, he said, would have been "appalled" at a young girl being sentenced to die.

Pelke, who now lives in Anchorage, Alaska, was in Indiana Monday for Cooper's release, but missed it. He said he expects Cooper to phone him sometime in the next few days.

In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to execute anyone who is younger than 18 years when they commit an offense.

Linley E. Pearson, who was Indiana's attorney general when Cooper appealed to the state Supreme Court, said research now shows that the human brain doesn't fully mature until age 24.

"So kids can do a lot of things they wouldn't do if they were an adult," Pearson said.

Cooper's sentence was reduced due to her behavior in prison, where she earned a bachelor's degree. She will remain on parole for a few years, Garrison said.

"We're just wanting her to be successful, that's all," he said. "She needs to get back to living."

Expert: Promoter created conflict with Jackson doc

FILE - In this March 5, 2009 file photo, Michael Jackson announces several concerts at the London O2 Arena in July, at a press conference at the London O2 Arena. AEG Live LLC CEO Randy Phillips told a jury on Wednesday June 12, 2013, that he saw Jackson as a forceful businessman who knew what he wanted and who he wanted to work with during preparations for his ill-fated ?This Is It? shows. Phillips concluded his testimony after eight days in a case filed by the singer?s mother, Katherine Jackson, over her son?s death, claiming AEG Live should be held responsible for hiring the doctor convicted of giving the superstar a lethal dose of an anesthetic. (AP Photo/Joel Ryan, file)

(AP) ? The promoter of Michael Jackson's ill-fated series of comeback shows created a conflict of interest with the singer's physician when it negotiated terms of his deal, an expert testifying for the superstar's mother told a jury on Monday.

David Berman told jurors hearing a negligent hiring lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live LLC that the company should not have negotiated with Jackson's physician without notifying the singer's representatives of the discussion.

The former head of Capitol Records and high-level positions at several other record companies is being paid to testify for Katherine Jackson in her lawsuit against the concert company.

Asked whether it was appropriate for AEG Live to attempt to hire a doctor on Jackson's behalf, Berman responded, "I believe that it's highly inappropriate. It is highly unusual."

Berman retired from the music industry in 2001 to become an expert witness for music industry-related lawsuits. He said he had never heard of a situation in which a tour promoter hired a doctor on behalf of an artist.

Berman said he believed that music companies owe a higher obligation to artists than to music buyers or concert goers and, in this instance, AEG failed Jackson.

He was shown emails in which a tour accountant traded emails with Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, without including any of the singer's representatives.

Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011, was never paid his $150,000 per month fee for working with Jackson. The superstar died from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol before signing Murray's contract.

AEG denies it hired Murray. The company's executives and lawyers have said the company was merely advancing Jackson the money to pay Murray, and a valid contract never existed.

The company's lawyers have yet to question Berman but already have objected to his expertise. An AEG Live defense attorney has noted that Berman was never a tour producer or promoter ? functions that AEG Live was serving as during preparations for Jackson's comeback shows.

Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos reminded jurors on Monday that they will ultimately decide whether AEG Live hired Murray.

Oil falls toward $97 ahead of Fed meeting

BANGKOK (AP) -- Oil prices fell Monday as traders refrained from big moves ahead of a critical meeting of U.S. central bank policymakers later in the week.

Benchmark oil for July delivery fell 33 cents to $97.52 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract for July delivery rose $1.16 to close at $97.85 a barrel on the Nymex amid concerns about a possible escalation in Syria's civil war.

The Fed has been supporting the U.S. economy by buying $85 billion in bonds every month as part of a plan to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing, spending and investing. Recent signs of a recovery, however, have raised questions about whether the Fed might start to pull back.

Some investors worry that long-term interest rates could spike when the Fed pulls back, threatening the economic recovery. The Fed will start a two-day meeting Tuesday to discuss the central bank's next steps.

"Ultimately markets are likely to successfully transition to a world of reduced Fed asset purchases but this may take a while. In the meantime market stress is set to remain elevated," said analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in a market commentary.

President Barack Obama's decision last week to provide weapons to rebels fighting the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad pushed up oil prices Friday. The Middle East is a key source of crude oil and important transit routes cross the region, so conflicts which threaten disruptions in crude production or supply usually push oil prices higher.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, fell 47 cents to $105.46 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.1 cent to $2.8890 a gallon.

? Heating oil added 1.3 cents to $2.96526 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 2.4 cents to $3.757 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Mad Men, Season 6

The episode kicked off with Kenneth Cosgrove getting shot in the face (and surviving, although we didn?t know it at the time; all around America people thought Oh my God, they killed Kenny). Kenny has featured in a series of increasingly horrifying cameos, culminating in this final defeat. The man hasn?t had much to do recently besides get beat up, get shot, and tap dance. I wonder if his physical battering is supposed to be analogous to the moral battering that the characters keep taking from their jobs and love lives.

After his shooting, Ken quits the Chevy account and hands his workload to Pete. He?s going to be a father. It?s time for compromise and responsibility. This leads to one of the best bits of dialogue all season as the partners try to talk him out of it. ?I once had a client cup my wife?s breast,? says Jim Cutler. Roger Sterling: ?Lee Garner Jr. made me hold his balls.?

These people are as broken inside as Ken is on the outside. Ted Chaough, on the other hand, is suddenly deeply opposed to compromise; he is courting Peggy (though in denial about doing so) and wants her to do her best work on a campaign for ... children's aspirin. If it?s good enough?and maybe it can be, if the client is willing to spend money?Peggy will win a Clio.

Peggy is surrounded by birth. (A better word might be haunted.) And by Ted. She?s doing an ad for St. Joseph?s children?s aspirin, working with a man for whom she has strong feelings, and her commercial is riffing on, of all things, Rosemary?s Baby.* Under the thinnest pretext she and Ted go see the movie?the choice of a Polanski-directed film will be catnip for the Megan-is-Sharon-Tate conspiracists?and get caught out by Don and Megan. It?s an early viewing; Megan notes that they were hiding. Movies are where Mad Men characters go to hide.

Rosemary?s Baby is about deception, about the vulnerability of women and the predatory, even Satanic nature of the very rich. Which makes it perfect fodder for this show. At the end of the movie Mia Farrow is finally reunited with her child (and Satan?s!) and her maternal instincts take over. A lesser show would probably show Peggy sobbing in the bathroom, but there can be an enormous, sometimes infinite distance between cause and effect on Mad Men. We may be reminded of Peggy?s pregnancy by the interstitial ads that confuse us when we try to fast-forward past the commercials, but it isn?t on anyone else?s mind.

Kenny wanting off of Chevy means that Pete sees a way onto the account. He wants to schmooze in Detroit, but is informed that he?ll be working with Bob Benson, whom Pete is convinced made a pass at him. This sets into motion a confrontation, in which Bob shows some spine. Pete: ?So you didn?t profess your love to me?? Bob: ?Only my admiration, which is waning quickly.? Although see this excellent breakdown of Bob?s sexuality for a different context.

That confrontation sets off a wave of research into Bob?s past, and we learn very rapidly that Bob, like Don, is a completely invented person, and is in fact a nobody from West Virginia. No blue-blood, he worked in private banking as a personal servant, which is where he picked up his impeccable manners. Hanna, you pointed out that Bob makes a perfect Nick Carraway, but here his story is exactly Jay Gatsby?s?signing up to see the world on Dan Cody?s yacht, and transforming himself from Gatz to Gatsby by pluck and criminality. All that?s missing is the bootlegging. And, of course, the incredible wealth.

For a long, fascinating moment it looked as if Pete and Bob were about to go to war. But Bob buckled?all he asked for was a day to clear out of sight. He?s been caught before. Pete, on the other hand, took a different path. He stepped aside. He said: ?I want you to graciously accept my apologies, work alongside me?but not too closely. I?m off-limits. And please, can you find a way to get your friend out of my mother?s life??

Pete once went to war with Don and lost utterly, but this was a very interesting move because, well, Pete won. Bob was ready to clear out, to vanish. Maybe Pete is growing and realizes he can get along if he doesn?t push away the people who are kind and caring toward him. Or maybe Pete just wants to unleash Bob and see what happens. Or maybe it?s both. Perhaps Bob is Rosemary?s baby.

There?s been a lot of this sort of Bob/Pete detente this season. (Anyone have any thoughts as to the title, ?The Quality of Mercy?? Is it about Pete and Bob? Is Pete the Shylock of Mad Men?) Don and Ted agreed to collaborate; Don and Sally found some sort of compromise through a closed door. If you can?t love one another you can agree not to hurt one another. And there?s also an acknowledgement: I see you.

Don may see Ted, to Ted?s discomfort, and he can see Peggy too. But he won?t see Megan. Perhaps it?s his guilt over Sylvia Rosen, but he literally turned her off when she appeared on his television. ?I?m talking to you,? said her character. ?Don?t you dare ignore me!? Click. Later he ignored her entreaty to come into the bedroom. He?s slipping, getting less and less visible, and she?s gone almost transparent to him. He?s spiking his orange juice. When Betty tells him Sally wants to go to boarding school he just offers to pay, whatever Sally wants.

Of all of them, Sally seems to have her head best on her shoulders. She can?t bear to be with her father after walking in on him. She finds her mother intolerable, with some justification. She needs desperately to be anywhere else, but she isn?t the type to disappear. She doesn?t want to go live in squalor in the East Village. She knows that she?s still a kid. Says as much, even. So she chooses boarding school.

I went to a boarding school?mine was for poor kids, so I didn?t experience the mix of privilege and cynicism that?s on display here. That said, I?ve known people who did go to the fancier schools and it seems the experience has some universal qualities. Boarding school compresses adolescence into its pure, aggressive essence. The hazing, the rituals, the sneaking through windows (we called it ?hooking out?)?there?s a society of teenagers separate from any other society. The school functioned in place of parents. Which meant that you were mothered by a bureaucracy. You succeeded by navigating that bureaucracy, routing through the rules, if you could figure out what they were.

I guess in these regards it was a lot like a regular high school, but it was high school at night, too, when your peers would wake up and wander like ghouls. (I have a memory of being awoken after midnight by a housemate who was simply unleashing fire extinguishers in sleeping people?s faces.) Vulnerability was weakness, so you became good at hiding things, both physical and emotional contraband. In that situation ?home? became a very fluid concept.

That?s why it rings very true to me that Sally would want this. The idea of home and family for her has become insanely complex, abstract, basically meaningless. Those girls hazing her, bringing her out, testing her?there?s actually an order there, amid all the teen bleakness. Seen one way it looks awful, but situations involving drugs and booze and a sexually aggressive boy are pretty typical to that age, not to mention that era. It?s how you handle it that counts. Sally got drunk but didn?t get high, she shut down Rollo and called him on his behavior, she called Glen to her rescue (does anyone have thoughts on his jacket?), and she impressed the hell out of her temporary roommate. She didn?t get caught, either, which is absolutely critical.

All of these behaviors are valuable in a boarding school, but they?re also valuable at Sterling, Cooper & Partners. Sally may spitefully claim her father never gave her anything, but she is her father?s daughter. Perhaps this is a place where she can thrive.

I like Bob, Chevy likes Bob, and if you don?t like Bob we can find someone who does,

J&J, in new $1 billion deal, bolsters prostate-cancer role

By Ransdell Pierson

(Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson said it would pay up to $1 billion for Aragon Pharmaceuticals and its experimental drugs for prostate cancer, bolstering J&J's role in the field after it acquired another experimental prostate-cancer treatment four years ago that has become a leading brand.

J&J on Monday said Aragon's lead product, called ARN-509, has potential to help patients whose prostate cancer has not yet spread to other parts of the body, as well as patients whose cancer has spread.

By contrast, J&J's blockbuster Zytiga treatment, acquired through its $1 billion purchase of Cougar Biotechnology in 2009, was approved in 2011 only for patients whose cancer has already spread.

The drugs are both meant for patients who fail to benefit from treatments that block testosterone, the male hormone that fuels prostate cancer, but they work through different means.

J&J spokeswoman Kellie McLaughlin said late-stage trials will be needed to assess how ARN-509 would be used. But she said the drug and Zytiga potentially could work well when used in combination because of their slightly different mechanisms of action.

"They might also be studied to see if they can be used sequentially, with patients first taking ARN-509 and then moving on to Zytiga as their disease progresses," McLaughlin said.

Aragon will receive $650 million in cash upfront from J&J under the deal, and a possible second payment of $350 million if ARN-509 meets certain milestones.

The deal does not include development of Aragon's treatment for breast cancer, which will be spun off into a separate company called Seragon Pharmaceuticals ahead of the deal and will be run by Aragon's chief executive officer.

McLaughlin said Zytiga has had the most successful introduction of any oral treatment for cancer, having been used by more than 60,000 patients worldwide. It generated first quarter sales of $344 million, putting it on track toward achieving full-year sales of well above the $1 billion J&J paid for Cougar Biotechnology.

"Prostate cancer is a key area of focus for us, and we are really excited about ARN-509 and adding it to our portfolio," McLaughlin said.

Shares of J&J rose 1.4 percent to $86.14 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange, outpacing a 0.9 percent gain for the ARCA Pharmaceutical Index of large U.S. and European drugmakers.

Ask Engadget help me tame my home network!

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Daniel, who needs our help to tame his home network. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"My home network is a mess. It used to be simple, after all, you'd just need a modem to connect to your ISP and a router. Lately, however, I've been adding more components like a NAS, a Z-Wave bridge, a 3G microcell and a computer for telecommuting. All of these things need a wired connection, which means I'm going to need to buy an eight-port switch sooner rather than later. As consumer hardware isn't designed to be uniform and stackable, I'm now living in a mess! What I'd like to know is how others have tidied up -- did you find an off-the-shelf cabinet or do I need to start building something on my own?"

Here's where we turn the question over to you, our loyal Engadgeteers, to help solve and spread some peace through the gadget ecosystem this Saturday night. If you've tamed your own out-of-control home network, share your experiences below.

China pressured NYU to make him leave, dissident says

By Jonathan Allen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese dissident who fled his home country to become a visiting scholar at New York University, accused the school on Sunday of asking him to leave because of "unrelenting pressure" from China.

NYU denied the claim, saying that it had said last year before the blind dissident arrived that his fellowship would last up to a year and end sometime this summer.

Chen sparked a diplomatic crisis between the United States and China after he fled house arrest last year and sought refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. NYU helped Chen come to the United States after he expressed fears for his family's safety if they were to remain in China.

In a statement, Chen thanked NYU for its hospitality and "good support," but accused it of giving in to the Communist Party of China.

"In fact, as early as last August and September, the Chinese Communists had already begun to apply great, unrelenting pressure on New York University, so much so that after we had been in the United States just three to four months, NYU was already starting to discuss our departure with us," he wrote.

Chen, who was born blind and taught himself law, was a campaigner for farmers and disabled citizens. He exposed forced abortions in China before he was placed under house arrest in Shandon province.

He has continued to be critical of China's human rights record since his arrival in New York in May 2012 with his wife and two children.

TV INTERVIEW

Chen said he believed the Chinese government wanted "to make me so busy trying to earn a living that I don't have time for human rights advocacy, but this is not going to happen."

NYU pointed to a PBS television interview in May 2012 with Jerome Cohen, an NYU law professor and friend of Chen who helped broker his departure from China. Cohen said Chen would be at NYU for a year at most while he adjusted to a new country.

Chen could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

John Beckman, an NYU spokesman, described Chen's claims as "both false and contradicted by the well-established facts."

"Mr. Chen's fellowship at NYU and its conclusion have had nothing to do with the Chinese government. All fellowships come to an end," Beckman said in a statement.

NYU said Chen had received offers from two other academic institutions. Fordham University Law School in New York said on Friday it was in talks with Chen, and the identity of the second institution has not been made public.

Beckman said NYU had started talking with the Chens about changes in living arrangements months ago. The school has provided them services that include housing, food, insurance and healthcare, English lessons and family support, he said.

NYU has been building a campus in Shanghai, and received final approval from China's education ministry to begin construction and student recruitment last autumn.
