Introduction: I realized that I need to introduce this blog a little. I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. The working title was Daemon, and this was my 21st novel. Over the last year, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. You can look back through this blog and read the entire novel.
I'm using this novel as an example of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll keep you informed along the way.

How important are trailers?? No idea.? My publisher wants them, encourages them, and posts them.? I have three other books that need trailers.? I should make them just because my publisher wants them.? That's kind of the point.? If your publisher thinks trailers are a good idea--then they are a good idea.? I recommend following your publishers advice always.? If you are an indie writer--do what you want, but realize, most publishers are encouraging writers to make trailers.
How effective are trailers.? I have no idea.? I'm not certain?if people watch them or not.? I haven't received any feedback positive or negative about my trailers.? I'll admit, my trailers could use some work.? Still, no feedback is an indicator.? It means that few have watched them.? What I should do is put them up on my You-Tube site and see what happens.? That way I'll know if anyone watches them.

Whitney Houston: a brilliant and tragic life (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Whitney Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room on Saturday, rose from a gospel church choir in New Jersey to become one of the best-selling and most-admired female singers of all time.
With hits like "I Will Always Love You" - the theme song of what was her film acting debut in "The Bodyguard" opposite Kevin Costner in 1992 - and "The Greatest Love of All," Houston won six Grammys and more than 400 other awards in a 25-year career.
Her soaring voice influenced singers ranging from Beyonce and Alicia Keys to Mariah Carey and Celine Dion - and inspired thousands of copy-cat performers on TV talent shows.
Her early successes also made her one of the first black artists, along with Michael Jackson, to find success on MTV. She later became the kind of singer and actress who could cross international barriers as well as ethnic ones.
"She had everything, beauty, a magnificent voice. How sad her gifts could not bring her the same happiness they brought us," singing legend Barbra Streisand said in a statement.
Critics hailed the range of her voice and the passion behind her performances.
But behind closed doors, her life was far from the romantic dreams she captured so brilliantly in her singing. She struggled for years with drug and alcohol problems, entering rehab again as recently as May 2011.
And on Saturday, her sudden death shocked the world as much as Jackson's passing from an overdose of sedatives and a powerful anesthetic in June 2009, at age 50. She joins a short list of brilliant singers - Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse and Jackson - whose lives were cut short by personal problems and drug abuse.
Houston died on the eve of the Grammy Awards, and just hours before she was due to attend the annual pre-Grammy party thrown by record producer Clive Davis - the man who discovered her in a nightclub in the early 1980s and who guided her career through its many ups and downs.
Her death came just over two years after a 2009 comeback following the end of a turbulent 14-year marriage to singer Bobby Brown. She is survived by their daughter, Bobbi Kris.
BATTLING DRUGS, MAKING MUSIC
Houston brought a painful and public honesty to her personal struggles, admitting in a 2002 TV interview that she had used marijuana, cocaine, alcohol and prescription drugs.
By 2009, as she released her first (and last) studio album in seven years with "I Look to You," she told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that her and Brown's drug of choice was marijuana mixed with cocaine.
She also described how when the two were high, he would break glass objects and at one point he painted what she called "evil eyes" on the walls of their home.
Her mother forced her into rehab, telling Houston "I'm not losing you to Satan," the singer told Winfrey.
The pair divorced in 2007 and Houston declared that she was clean. But a comeback tour of Europe was dogged by poor performances, bizarre behavior, and repeated denials that she was back on drugs.
It was all a far cry from the days when Houston began singing in a gospel choir in New Jersey at the age of 11, and later accompanied her mother, the rhythm and blues singer Cissy Houston, in concerts and on an album.
Houston, whose cousin was singer Dionne Warwick and whose godmother was Aretha Franklin, did some modeling and started singing on jazz albums in the early 1980s before Davis heard her and offered her a record contract.
Her self-titled debut album was released in 1985 and produced the hit singles "Saving All My Love For You," "How Will I Know" and "The Greatest Love of All." At more than 13 million copies, it was the best-selling debut album ever by a female artist.
Houston's global appeal survived the ups and downs of her career and personal life: her last album, "I Look to You," debuted at No. 1 in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, and was her first No. 1 since "The Bodyguard."
She appeared in the movies "The Preacher's Wife" and "Waiting to Exhale," and had recently finished filming a musical drama called "Sparkle" with "American Idol" singer Jordin Sparks. The movie, ironically, is about a girl singing group who has to deal with the fallout of fame and drugs. It is scheduled for release in August 2012.

Woman pleads guilty in 1987 kidnapping of infant (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A woman who took a 19-day-old baby from a New York City hospital nearly a quarter century ago and raised the girl as her own pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal kidnapping charge.
Ann Pettway, 50, admitted in Manhattan federal court that on August 4, 1987, she kidnapped Carlina White, who had been brought to a Harlem hospital by her parents to be treated for a fever.
Pettway, dressed as a nurse, walked out of the hospital with the baby in her arms and caught a train back to her home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to the police account.
Pettway renamed the child Nejdra Nance, and raised the child as her own. White was a teenager when she began to suspect that Pettway was not her biological mother. When White asked Pettway for her birth certificate, Pettway told White she did not have it because she was given to her as an infant by a woman who used drugs, prosecutors said.
In 2010, White found a picture of a missing child in a database run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that seemed to resemble her own baby pictures. Her hunch was eventually confirmed with the help of DNA testing, and in 2011 she was reunited with her biological parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson, who had since separated.
As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Pettway agreed to plead guilty to a single charge of kidnapping that carries a sentencing guideline range of about 10 to 12-and-a-half years. Judge P. Kevin Castel is not obliged to accept the recommendation. The maximum sentence Pettway faces is life in prison.
Sentencing is due to take place on May 14. Pettway's lawyer, a public defender, did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.

@Sneakyrio No I don't use character sheets. They are kind of like training wheels and I want players who are advanced enough that they no longer need them. I know that from a player's perspective this can be annoying, but it helps keep out the fail without me having to reject folks. I will, however, edit the intro so as to be a tad more specific about what I want in a character submission.

The Beach Boys to start party early at Grammys (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Get the sunglasses and tanning oil out: The Beach Boys are reuniting at The Grammys Awards for their first live performance in more than two decades.
The original lineup of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks will be joined by Grammy nominees Foster the People and Maroon 5 in a special performance.
A news release Wednesday also says The Civil Wars, Diana Krall and Joe Walsh have been added to the performance lineup and Common, Reba McEntire and Diana Ross will be presenters.
The Beach Boys announced late last year that they would reunite to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a new album and tour.
The Grammy Awards will be broadcast live Sunday night on CBS.

Playwrights and theaters join Japan benefit push (AP)
NEW YORK ? Celebrated playwrights including Stephen Sondheim, Tony Kushner and Edward Albee have joined a fundraiser to mark the anniversary of a devastating earthquake in Japan.
All will be offering 10-minute plays and songs to be performed March 11. The effort also has united 35 arts organizations across 12 states. Funds will help the Japanese theater community.
Participating artists include Suzan-Lori Parks and Richard Greenberg, who both will write original pieces. Sondheim with writer John Weidman will revise a section of their musical "Pacific Overtures."
In New York, the effort has united some of the city's most powerful theaters, including Lincoln Center Theater, Playwrights Horizons, The Public Theater and Manhattan Theatre Club. Theatre Communications Group said Thursday it's leading the effort.
An earthquake and tsunami struck Japan last March 11, leaving 20,000 people dead or missing.

Buffett's railroad to spend $3.9B on upgrades (AP)
OMAHA, Neb. ? Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the railroad owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., plans to spend $3.9 billion on network upgrades this year as the economy improves.
The railroad says that its capital spending plan is $400 million bigger than its 2011 budget.
The nation's major freight railroads, which include BNSF, together plan to spend about $13 billion this year, up from 2011's $12 billion.
BNSF says it will spend $2.1 billion to upgrade its core rail network; $1.1 billion on locomotives, freight cars and other equipment; and about $300 million on developing the federally mandated system to remotely stop trains headed for a collision.
The railroad is based in Fort Worth, Texas. Berkshire Hathaway is based in Omaha, Neb.

Illuminated in a dark room, a black external hard drive is raised on a plinth. It?s only when viewers are told that the drive contains - five million dollars worth of illegally downloaded content, according to the copyright holders - that the artwork takes on meaning.
The piece, titled 5 Million Dollars 1 Terabyte, forms part of the flagship exhibition at Transmediale?- a popular Berlin festival that focuses on the intersection of art and digital culture.
As the new tech-startup capital of Europe, Berlin plays perfect host to the event. This year?s title in/compatible draws inspiration from current social and political turmoil - the economic crisis, Occupy movement and online ?hacktivism?, as well as technological developments and the resulting cultures - both real-world and virtual - that emerge.
Transmediale?s flagship exhibition Dark Drives: Uneasy Energy in Technological Times, curated by Jacob Lillemose, sets out to explore the price we pay for the conveniences we enjoy as a result of technological progress.
As the storm over intellectual property in the digital age continues to rage, his simple image of a (hard drive) box on a plinth manages to set the bendy reeds of technological dynamism in stark contrast to the static old oak of human institutions.
Lillemose led a tour of his exhibition, explaining how and why he selected the 35 works of art, which consist mostly of videos (Transmediale started life as a video festival), but also include photographs, slideshows and even full music albums.
Entering the exhibition hall, his obsession with obscurity is immediately apparent. Almost pitch black, the cavernous space is lit only by the works of art, which draw you in with flickering, glitchy allure.
Lillemose explained that each piece deals in some way with our relationship with technology. For example, an installation of Chris Cunningham?s Aphex Twin music video Come to Daddy?is presented as a dystopian scenario where the television ?wants your soul?. Despite this, a full 55 minute television programme is on offer nearby, in the form of Jay Dahl?s Web Warriors from 2008. The programme deals with the way both governmental and non-governmental forces are increasingly using the internet to fight ?cyberwars?.
Meanwhile, in the background, the sounds of Marcelina Wellmer?s work can be heard. Entitled 502, 404, 410, the installation is a cross-section of three working hard disk units. Each unit is named after one of those server responses and has a contact microphone attached. When the drive spins we are confronted with the sound of the error and are encouraged to think of it differently, as a material rather than an invisible, abstract event.
What is perhaps the most affecting work is also likely the simplest. A slideshow sourced from photo sharing website Flickr?s database, the selection features images of an immense Ghanaian dump full of ?e-waste?. The throwaway culture of today?s technology on the part of consumers, along with a capitalist tendency towards planned obsolescence on the manufacturers? side, means that hundreds of millions of tonnes of e-waste is produced annually. The vast majority comes from the developed world and ends up in developing countries, where it causes environmental devastation and huge health risks for those working in the burgeoning recycling trade.Beyond forcing us to contemplate the troubling implications of new technologies, the exhibition offers few solutions. To Lillemose, this is actually a key point. Technology solves many problems, but in doing so it creates new, unexpected and unprecedented ones. Through his thoughtfully curated show, Lillemose highlights the need for new approaches to solving these problems, suggesting that instead of running an unwinnable race against the machines, we should employ our very human ability to stop and reflect upon the complex consequences of our own inventions.
